Matthew Khan

Post-doctoral Research Associate

Dr Matthew Khan is researching technologies for the realisation of inertial fusion energy.

Working as part of the UPLiFT program, I am helping to progress our understanding of how to realise inertial fusion energy in a real-world power plant. This is a wide-reaching project, with my current focus being on the advanced implosion scheme of Shock-Augmented Ignition (10.1103/PhysRevLett.129.195001), and injected capsule survival physics.

My PhD was completed at the University of York, under the supervision of Prof. Nigel Woolsey, where my thesis was titled “Advanced Direct Drive Shock Ignition Studies”. I investigated the Shock Ignition scheme through two experiments performed on the Omega laser facility.

Research Interests

Inertial confinement fusion, shock-augmented ignition, laser-plasma interactions, hard x-ray diagnostics

Publications:

Performance enhancement of direct-drive shock-augmented ignition inertial fusion implosions through shock timing optimization (Physical Review Journals)

ORCID: 0000-0003-4448-0125
