The CLF and MNTC have produced Silicon Nitride limited mass targets for use on the Vulcan and Astra Gemini laser systems that are ultra-thin with a thickness of 30 nanometres and one micron in diameter.
These targets are for experiments carried out by the Libra consortium. The group is using the targets to investigate the development of a new type of ion source by shining a powerful laser beam on to a small piece of metal causing intense high-energy ionising radiation to be ejected from the surface.
