Funded by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), this £4 million centre jointly established between UK’s Central Laser Facility (CLF) and Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) is housed in laboratories set up at TIFR Hyderabad.
The CLF, at the Science and Technology Facilities Council’s Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL), is a world-leader in the next-generation laser technology that can drive compact accelerators yielding bright particle and x-ray beams that, in the near future, will transform imaging capabilities in industry and medicine. TIFR has been pursuing intense laser science over the past two decades, and has unraveled many unique features in this field.
EPIC will develop and exploit laser-driven accelerator applications with economic and societal impact. The joint UK and India scheme will use particle and x-ray beams with the aim of revolutionising a wide range of areas, from industrial, non-destructive testing to bio-medical imaging. EPIC will bring together world-leading expertise in lasers, accelerator science & technology, target fabrication, engineering and diagnostics.
