The biennial Time Resolved Vibrational Spectroscopy meeting was held virtually via an app called 'Gather' which lets you create an avatar and interact with others (Screenshots above). Paul was presented his award by the Chair of the International Advisory Committee of the Time-Resolved Spectroscopy Conference, Edwin J. Heilweil, during the conference.
The Emerging Researcher award is to celebrate scientists who are leaders in the field of developing ultrafast spectroscopy of molecular systems, particularly molecular vibrations providing information about dynamical structures, photochemical processes, and energy transfer.
Paul says, “I am absolutely delighted to be appreciated by my peers and leaders in the field in this way."
Paul has been doing research in ultrafast spectroscopy for more than 18 years. In 2013, he joined at the Central Laser Facility (CLF), building a new 2D-IR, TR-IR and SFG spectrometers for our visiting user groups. His fascination with how we can utilise light to interact with substances eventually led to UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) awarding him a UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship. As part of his fellowship, for the past 2 years, Paul has started a research group where he is applying ultrafast spectroscopy to problems in catalysis and battery science.
Nominees are often selected for their past strong participation at TRVS conferences but have been developing their own research programme for about 10 years after receipt of their PhD or postdoctoral experience.
