Background
Jake joined CALTA as a Laser Scientist in 2019, having completed his PhD at Nottingham Trent University, where his research focused on laser processing of materials, thin film deposition and analysis, and nanoparticle templates and their optical properties.
Since joining CALTA, Jake has mainly worked as part of the team designing, constructing and testing a 10 J, 100 Hz repetition rate, diode-pumped, solid-state laser system, based on the DiPOLE amplifier technology. His work focuses on the operation and design of the Front-End section of the system. This is being built in collaboration with our partners at HiLASE.
Jake is also heavily involved in a number of activities using the DiPOLE 10 J, 10 Hz laser system, including multiple experimental campaigns and an internally funded Proof-of-Concept campaign investigating a novel approach to laser shock peening. Jake is always looking for opportunities to explore other laser processing applications, well suited to the DiPOLE systems and technology.
In addition to this, Jake is also heavily involved in the recruitment and management of Industrial Placement students and hosting Work Experience students.
