Quite often hazardous and high pressure gases are used in the operation of lasers, produced as a by-product or used in the experiments at the CLF such as Fluorine, HCl, Methane, Hydrogen and Ozone. Each gas has its own unique hazards and there may be the potential for the release of a stored energy resulting in explosion. Care must always be exercised when dealing with gases. Even inert gases such as Nitrogen can cause asphyxiation when used in a confined space.
Systems involving the use of hazardous or high pressure gases must only be installed, tested or modified by competent persons with the authorisation of the Nominated Engineer or deputy. Personnel who wish to begin any new work involving hazardous or high pressure gases must obtain prior approval. Only pressure reducing valves registered by the CLF are to be used on equipment and can be obtained from or approved by the authorised persons.
Procedures to be taken in the event of a leakage must be included in the area’s standing orders. These procedures must be followed by all CLF staff and visitors.
Nominated officers authorised for Toxic, Flammable, Hazardous and High Pressure Gases are listed on the local safety card for the area(s) in which you will be working.
