The commissioning beamtime has not only been a chance to test the capabilities of the new tools, but also to expand the means for users to take part in experiments remotely—an increasingly important issue as users seek to fly less and be more conscious of carbon emissions from travel. The users and beamline scientists are using this time to study some unusual types of “two-dimensional" crystals that might someday have applications in next-generation devices and new approaches to computation.
