Published in Chemical Communications: The Ultra team in collaboration with University College Dublin used time-resolved infrared spectroscopy to understand how the ruthenium light-switch complex binds to i-motif DNA.
I-motif DNA (also known as i-DNA) is a peculiar 4 stranded DNA, unlike the iconic double stranded DNA most of us know. I-motif DNA plays a part in cell production, and the team were keen to learn more about this structure by observing the interaction it has with the ruthenium “light-switch" complex ([Ru(phen)2dppz]2+) – particularly how the loops in the complex may influence its binding to i-motif DNA.
